Oceanology International China 2014

Oceanology International China 2014 (OI China 2014) was successfully held at Shanghai International Exhibition and Convention Center during September 3 - 5. On the strength of more than 40 years’ industry experience garnered at the Oceanology International, OI China 2013 attracted over 190 enterprises from more than 20 countries and regions. During the exhibition, a total of 4,296 domestic and overseas professional visitors showed up. By showcasing homegrown and international top technologies and equipment, OI China set itself the goal of becoming the foremost professional exhibition of marine science and technology in Asia, and it promotes academic research, information exchange and international cooperation in the fields of the development and utilization of marine resources, marine ecological environment protection, offshore oil and gas exploration, ocean engineering and marine monitoring in China, Asia and the world.   Chau-Chang Wang, Director, Institute of Undersea Technology, National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan   Chau-Chang Wang, Director, Institute of Undersea Technology, National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan; Affiliated Senior Engineer at Applied Physics Lab, University of Washington, adjunct researcher at Institute of Earth Science, Academia Sinica, and Taiwan Ocean Research Institute. He participates in many instrument development projects such as OBS (ocean bottom seismometer), ROV (remotely operated vehicle) and ABL (autonomous benthic lander). Dr. Wang majored in mechanical engineering and got his Ph.D. in robotics from University of Pennsylvania in 1995. After one year of postdoctoral training in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Cheng-Kung University, he joined the Institute of Undersea Technology and shifted his research field to ocean related topics, especially the R&D of underwater instrument. He promoted an idea called “Science-Oriented Technology Development” to tighten the trilateral ties among scientists and engineers in ocean academic communities and private sectors in Taiwan. In the past six years, he works closely with several local companies to transfer them the ideas of design and manufacturing ocean instruments based on the abilities industries currently have. Several ideas were successfully incubated and realized as commercial products with this model. There was used to be no domestic products or systems available in Taiwan ocean business because lacking of technical know-how and resources dedicated to the R&D of ocean instrument system. Now, more and more marine and underwater systems can be design and fabricated in Taiwan. He and his colleagues in academic community and industry hope to encourage more partners to transform their profound design and fabrication abilities to serve for the ocean business. Abstract: On the Development of a Portable Twisted-Pair-Based Towed Platform for Deep Sea Exploration Conventionally, ocean survey adopts sonar systems to explore the seafloor environment because acoustic waves are the only effective signal in penetrating the water column, and sensing the seafloor and layers beneath it. As the seafloor ecology and benthic study gain more attention, the deep sea images provide direct and important information regarding the condition of the environment. These images are acquired by ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), towed cameras or AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle). ROV and towed camera transmit high quality images back to the surface in real time while AUV records video or photos which are reviewed afterwards. It seems that the tethered system is more convenient for science studies, and should be widely adopted on research vessels. However the operation of an ROV or a towed camera system involves the mobilization of a heavy duty winch for spooling the long umbilical cable. Moreover, ROV and the winch system generally occupy a large portion of the deck space such that the remaining deck space is quite limited and the existence of the ROV will hamper the operation of other large tools such as coring system. In this study, we propose to utilize the existing facilities onboard to build a deep sea imaging system which relays the live image from the seafloor. The concept is: On most of the research vessel CTD (Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth) is designated as a standard equipment and a primary tool for measuring essential physical properties of sea water. It helps scientists to chart the variation of water temperature, salinity, and density that helps to understand how the oceans affect life or how ocean phenomena evolve. A cable, several thousand meters in length, is used to deploy the CTD device and transmit the measurement back to the surface as the CTD is lowered to the ocean. The working load of this cable is typically several hundred to thousands of kilograms. But for the simplicity and durance, it is made of a twist pair or a co-axial cable with metal armor. CTD data bandwidth requirement is quite small. Therefore the CTD modem only offers about 1 Kbps data rate, which is insufficient for live image transmission. We take the advantage of Taiwan’s prosperous security surveillance industry which is the main supplier of the international market. We worked with a local vender to re-design an SHDSL (Symmetrical high-speed digital subscriber line) to replace the original slow speed modem, and transform the twist pair into a local Ethernet backbone. With this high data rate (1 Mbps) network, IP-Camera with HD quality broadcasts live images from the seafloor. The operation depth is only limited by the cable length and the depth rating of the housing of the system. Because of its lightness in weight and compactness in volume, it can be easily placed in the onboard storage space and get ready to serve in short time, as opposed to the cumbersome preparation needed by the operation of an ROV.
